The aim of the present study was to investigate whether such effects might be due to the production of intrafemoral bone at the expense of the other femur regions and consequent skeletal muscle impairment. In particular, we hypothesized that SARMs could disrupt the normal production of androgens in bone marrow cells, thus impairing the differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells and thereby reducing the amount of bone produced. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the effect of SARMs in intact female rats, at doses that induce similar endocrine effects as in humans. On the basis of biochemical and molecular markers, we found that SARMs induce a selective increase in bone formation and a reduction of bone resorption in the femur diaphysis.
